Wine At The Table

Stirn, François Jobard, Mugnier

12 January 2009

I opened another Domaine Stirn Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru 2006. A really beautiful wine, amazing for the year. Moderate alcohol, dry, perfect structure and excellent length. Everything you could want in a Riesling.

In interesting contrast via a François Jobard Bourgogne Blanc 2005 which will have to become my house white I think. The quality is far above the level of most Bourgogne blanc (being largely declassified young vine fruit that doesn’t go into the Meursault cuvées). Youthful colour and nose, white peach and a touch of lemon pith, excellent acid in the mouth. Different to a lot of 2005s and very drinkable. I preferred it to the Domaine William Fevre Chablis 2007. That said, the latter was still an enjoyable wine, lighter, almost salty, excellent acid. Just lacking interesting, especially for the price.

The J.F. Mugnier Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru Nuits-Saint-Georges 2006 was also extremely good. The nose was lifted full of rich, concentrated cassis and raspberry aromas. The palate was velvety, mouth-filling but poised. Beautiful structure with very fine tannin. Another great effort from this vineyard. Worth tracking down.
