Wine At The Table

Beaujolais Nouveau

24 November 2008

Beaujolais Nouveau at Bar du Square in Beaune.

The Beaujolais Nouveau is made by one of the best producers in the region, Marcel Lapierre. It was soft, fruity, lip smackingly acid, very fresh, like a barrel sample. None of those awful overtones of bubblegum. Very good for what it is.

Moved to something a little more serious with a Pierre Matrot Auxey-Duresses rouge 2004. This started off a little green but after decanting showed spice and complexity that I really enjoyed. A well made, interesting wine.

I was a little more disappointed by the Vincent Dureuil-Janthial Rully “Les Clous” 2006 which looked riper than when I had it six months ago. Maybe a poor bottle. I have one more, so we’ll see.

A Domaine de Grillet blanc 2004 looked botrytised and odd for the vintage. A Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Marconnets 2002 was more sophisticated, showing evolution and a slight volatility which, admittedly, gave the wine lift but was occasionally a little jarring.

Throughout the week, I had a Bouchard Père et Fils Monthelie Champs Fulliots 2006 which I found disappointing: a bit green and a little unbalanced at the moment. Perhaps it will come together in time?

Weather update: snowing heavily here in Beaune.
