J P Magnien Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru 2003 Not a vintage I like but it was time to have another good. Light, almost elegant but a smokiness that points to the vintage. With time, this smokiness takes on a very slight burntness — but nothing compared to what I’ve seen else where. The 2003s have been really weird and I think they’ll continue to be. Acceptable wine but just lacking in complexity.
Chateau d’Yquem 1994 Drunk over two days. First night, ungiving and one dimension. Couldn’t drink it, it was just alcohol. Second night, much more complex but overly botrytised for Yquem and lacking the refreshing acidity I like. A weak vintage to be sure but it’s very hard to enjoy young Yquem.
Pierre Jacques Druet “Grand Mont” Bourgueil 2000 A slightly faulty cork found this baby leaking. Still showed typicity, very stalky, lots of graphite and pencil shavings with a core deer blood. Structurally fine but advanced.
