Alex arrived in Paris today. Juveniles being totally booked out, we popped around the corner to Macéo, Mark Williamson’s restaurant next to his successful wine bar Willi’s.
Food was good, standard prices for the area, the food was good if not inspired. The wine list could be better, in my opinion. There’s a dearth of older wine (‘do you have any aged cote rotie?’ ‘yes, we have some as old as 1999!’). We had a Claude Cazals NV. Seemed dominated by green fruit/meunier flavours. A strange NV to carry, as it is an unpopular style. We then had a Burgaud Côte Rotie 1999. As the sommelier said, this was starting to drink well. Classic Côte Rotie aromas with mulberry, floral/viognier aromas. The structure is very approachable and well suited to duck. A good wine which improved over the night.
Good to see Alex in Paris. Lots more notes coming up as I’m off to Senderens this evening, then Tour d’Argent, St John in London, Troisgros, etc.
