Alex, Phil and Oli came over on Friday night. What was meant to be a quiet catch up turned into something bigger, when Alex and Phil called and said they were looking for an excuse to drink. The official excuse was that I had 2.5 Kgs of pork to eat.
We started with a few sweet aperitifs again. These work so great when it gets cold. I think I’ve decided that German sweet wine works best now and not in summer.
Muller-Catoir Scheurebe Spatlese 2003 Unctuous with, brilliant for the year. Floral, honey. Big palate with lots of musk and rose petal. Great drinking now. This producer is amazing, maybe my favourite in Germany.
Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese 1997 Lots of botrytis, very forward, big wine by Mosel standards. Delicious. Really singing.
Marc Colin Chassagne-Montrachet “Les Caillerets” 2004 Very youthful, great structure. Superb. Will go 10 to 15.
Time to move on to the reds.
d’Angerville Volnay “Clos des Ducs” 1er Cru 2000 Man, talk about austere. This is like a barrel sample. The finish is hard and gives nothing. I thought this must have been a de Montille Volnay or maybe a Corton from Faiveley. Needs a lot more time, at least 5 years on this example.
Meerea Park Terracotta 2004 When we first decanted this, it smelt like a slightly bretty Chateauneuf. After about 3 hours in the decanter, woah! A huge explosion of violets and sweet stone fruit (is there any viognier in it?). Big juicy palate, good oak handling, very persistent. Not really my style but I can see why people like it.
Kracher Scheurebe Trockenbeerenauslese 1996 Unctious, mouth coating, a Germanic pastry shop, liquidified. Delicious.
